Radio Mikoko+: A Translocal Activation of Mangrove Ecologies

Mangrove Ecologies is an ongoing platform that explores mangroves as living systems and metaphors for adaptation, transformation, resistance, and transspecies relation. The first edition focuses on the mangrove ecosystem of Lamu in Kenya and was developed through fieldwork and artistic research along the Swahili coast. Emerging from this process, Radio Mikoko+ was conceived as a shared medium between the collaborating artists, serving as a vessel for sonic and ecological exchange.

The installation brings these encounters into a multisensory experience within the Botanical Garden of the University of Basel. Informed by residencies, workshops, and community dialogue, it invites visitors to engage with listening as a form of ecological awareness. Soundscapes, speculative narratives, visual scores, poetry, and counter-mappings come together to transform the Viktoriahaus into a listening garden—a space shaped by tides, winds, and cultural memory.
